What Is Sedation Dentistry?
All too many people are fearful of getting the dental care they need due to past traumatic experiences. Sedation dentistry is a field dedicated to your comfort. It involves the use of sedative medications that help create a calm and relaxed state, ensuring our patients enjoy stress-free care.
Sedation dentistry can help every patient feel relaxed in the dentist’s chair. It is particularly beneficial for the following:
- Individuals with anxiety or dental phobia who have extreme fear about dental procedures
- Patients with strong gag reflexes who have difficulty tolerating dental procedures
- Those requiring multiple dental procedures or complex treatments
- Patients who have medical conditions that can be worsened by stress
- Individuals with past traumatic dental experiences
- Patients who find it challenging to sit still for long periods during treatment
What Are Your Sedation Dentistry Options?
At Periodontics of Orange County, we offer a range of sedation dentistry options right here at our Santa Ana practice, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Dr. Lacrampe will recommend the ideal form of sedation based on your unique needs.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation: This inhaled form of sedation involves breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask placed on the nose, leaving you with a euphoric feeling that quickly spreads through your body. You’ll be awake and responsive during treatment but should feel calm and relaxed. Laughing gas helps minimize the sensation of pain, reducing the amount of local anesthetics you need in many cases. Once your treatment is done, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off right away, so you can drive home safely and resume your daily activities without interruption.
IV Sedation: IV sedation is a moderate form of sedation that involves administering the sedative medication through an IV straight into your bloodstream, quickly providing a deep state of calm and relaxation. You may fall asleep but will be conscious, unlike general anesthesia. IV sedation has amnesic properties, which is why most of our patients remember very little, if any, of their treatment. Dr. Lacrampe is certified to administer IV sedation, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for his patients.
General Anesthesia: Our team at Periodontics of Orange County has partnered with board-certified anesthesiologists who administer general anesthesia at our office and monitor your vital signs throughout treatment to ensure you are safe and comfortable during and after treatment. General anesthesia will leave you in a deep state of sleep, ensuring you have no recollection of your treatment.
What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

- It helps ensure better patient cooperation, leading to more efficient and successful treatment.
- It helps reduce or eliminate pain and discomfort during dental procedures.
- It allows for longer treatment sessions, meaning multiple dental procedures can be completed in fewer visits.
- It helps overcome dental anxiety, preventing the avoidance of future dental care.
